Two other small cream-glazed stoneware rabbits with brown-glazed eyes of this approximate size and type, but shown seated in an upright position have been published. One from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Alsdorf was included in the exhibition, The Arts of the T'ang Dynasty, Los Angeles County Museum, 8 January - 17 February, 1957, no. 273; and the other illustrated in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, Tokyo, 1976, p. 83, no. 218. In both instances the figures have been dated to the Tang dynasty. However, their similarity to the present figure and the results of a thermoluminescence test of the present figure indicate that they are also of Song/Yuan date.
The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. P199u46 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
