    Pre-Lot Text

Popular both during and after Barye's lifetime, Gazelle d'Éthiopie was modelled in 1834, although most épreuves, including the two offered here, bear the date 1837. Barye appears to have modelled two variants for the base, the earlier, as in these examples, being straight-sided and inscribed with the title of the work. After 1876, the second version, with grooved sides to its base, was edited by Barbedienne.
