Calza studied with Cignani who sent him to study battle painting with Jacques Courtois in Rome. Afterwards he worked in Turin, Milan, Bologna, Venice and Vienna. He worked for Prince Eugene of Savoy, Zaccaria Sagredo and Johann Matthias von Schulenburg. A large number of his drawings are now at the Uffizi (S. Marinelli, Cinque secoli di disegno veronese, exhib. cat., Florence, Uffizi, 2000, nos. 66-69, figs. 77-80).
