    Lot Essay

Landscapes appear very frequently in the backgrounds of Castillo's drawings, although the present work is his only known pure landscape. Trees of the same type and drawn in the same style can be found in drawings in the Abello Collection, two in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid, and in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (M. Nancarrow and B. Navarrete Priero, Antonio del Castillo, Madrid, 2004, figs. 103, 105, 107 and 153).
