Lot Essay

Antonio Jacobsen painted fourteen versions of the Black Ball Line's Columbia. He completed six of these in 1916; these include three oil sketches and three completed oils, and may include the example illustrated here. Sailing out of New York City, Columbia was built in 1846 by William H. Webb and remained in commission until 1898. See Sniffen, Antonio Jacobsen: The Checklist (New York, 1984), pp. 76-79.
