Lot Essay

The artist, in a letter to Ernest Chesneau dated 2 May 188[2], expresses gratitude for his proposed inclusion in Chesneau's forthcoming survey of important British artists, and he goes on to list the present work as amongst 'my chief pictures' (Roberts, op. cit., p. 285).
