Lot Essay

The silver backing plate is engraved 'von Chodktz' which may refer to the Polish-Lithuanian noble family Chodkiewicz who were granted the title of Count of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Charles V. If this inscription refers to the identity of the sitter, he may be Jan Karol Chodkiewicz (1686-1712) who married Cecilia Zofia Sapiezanka in Lublin in 1710 and had a son born in 1711, Adam Tadeusz.
