S. Leigh Sotheby, F.S.A., according to an inscription 'from Mr Sotheby's Collection Sold in London 1862' on the mount (not apparently in his sale, Sotheby and Wilkinson, 6 February 1862).

A very similar group of figures appears in Brizio's altarpiece of 1618 in the Church of San Petronio, Bologna (E. Hermann-Atorino, Francesco Brizio, Worms, 1989, no. F10, fig. 20).
