Based on a composition by Jan Brueghel I, datable c. 1611, with figures by Hendrik van Balen I, in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome
(K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, Cologne, 1979, pp. 599-600,
no. 251, pl. 442). Numerous versions of this composition exist, including that on canvas by Jan Brueghel II, with figures also by Hendrik van Balen I (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel the Younger, Freren, 1984, pp. 362-3, no. 197, fig. 197). A version on panel was sold at Galerie Charpentier, Paris, 2 April 1957, lot 4; another, on copper, and more closely related to the present picture than the others, was sold at Mak, Amsterdam, 18 March 1918, lot 7, as Hendrik van Balen, signed and dated 'H.B. 1649(?)'. Although little is known about Hendrik van Balen the Younger's paintings, the date on the present picture makes it too late for it to have been executed by his father.
