Bay Middleton was by Sultan out of Cobweb, seen here with James Robinson up, in the colors of Lord Jersey (dark blue and buff stripes, with a black cap). He was foaled in 1833 and so the present work depicts him in his best year, 1836, as a three year old. Bay Middleton was one of the best horses of the 19th Century and was never beaten in six contested races including the Derby, 2000 guineas, Riddlesworth and Grand Duke Michael Stakes all at three years old. He was ridden in all his races by James Robinson. At stud he produced one horse of his own quality The Flying Dutchman.
