The attribution to Lodewijk de Vadder was suggested by Stijn Alsteens with reference to a signed drawing in Munich (W. Wegner, Die Niederländischen Handzeichnungen des 15.-18. Jahrhunderts, Berlin 1973, no. 974, pl. 138). Another similar drawing is in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels (Dessins Flamands et Hollandais du Dix-Septième Siècle, exhib. cat., Paris, Institut Néerlandais, 1974, no. 114, pl. 126), while a third showing almost exactly the same view as the present drawing is in the Louvre (F. Lugt, Musée du Louvre, Inventaire Général des Dessins des Écoles du Nord; Ecole Flamande, II, N-Z et Anonymes, Paris, 1949, no. 1271). The spire and buildings to the right of this drawing can be seen in a drawing by Cantagallina now in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels (Met passer en penseel, exhib. cat., Brussels, 2000, p. 217).
Another drawing by the same hand but inscribed 'P: Brill' in the same script as the attribution to Perelle on the present drawing, and likewise with number 'N:66', was sold in these Rooms, 19 April 1988, lot 129 (as Circle of Lucas van Uden).
We are grateful to Stijn Alsteens and Hans Buijs of the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, and to Peter Schatborn for their help on cataloguing this and the following drawing.
