Lady Ottoline Morrell, the society hostess and patron, was connected with the Bloomsbury Group. From 1908 she entertained a wide circle of politicians and thinkers at her house in Bedford Square and at her country retreat at Garsington Manor in Oxfordshire. Ottoline was a cousin of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who would later marry King George VI. She married Philip Morrell in 1902, but like so many of the Bloomsbury Group, her relationship was far from conventional. She had affairs with Bertrand Russell and Augustus John.
