Known for his expertise in oil portraits and historical works, Augustus Friedlander first exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1883. By 1888, he had moved to New York and opened a studio on Broadway where he produced his signature genre paintings. Street Musician demonstrates not only the artist's technical facility but his aptitude for portraying genre subjects with the attention to psychology and physiognomy found in the most innovative portraiture of the time.
