[AUSTEN, Jane]. Emma: A novel... By the Author of "Pride and Prejudice," &c. &c. London: John Murray, 1816.
3 volumes, 12o (175 x 103 mm). Half-titles in each volume. (Some minor marginal flaws in vol. 2, otherwise fine.) Contemporary polished calf (front cover vol. 1 detached, spines rubbed); cloth slipcase.
FIRST EDITION, with half-titles in each volume. Arguably Jane Austen's greatest novel, Emma was begun on 21 January 1814 and finished in a little over a year on 29 March 1815. Following her visit to Carlton House, it was dedicated to the Prince Regent at the suggestion of the Prince's librarian, and published at her own expense, with profits to the author after payment of a 10 commission to John Murray. The work encountered printing delays, and advertisements did not appear for it until late December, 1815. Gilson A8; Keynes p. 14; Sadleir I, 62d. (3)
