2° (278 x 182mm). Blank A1 present, engraved portrait of the King by John Payne as frontispiece, full woodcut architectural border to title, ornamental initials. Errata on pp. 80, 90, 101, and 139 uncorrected. (A little staining at upper margins at end.) Contemporary limp vellum (stained at upper edge). Provenance: Kiveton (inscription on title) -- puchased from Pickering and Chatto, London, 28 November 1941, $48.
SECOND EDITION, with the errata partly corrected, of Bacon's influential biography. Gibson lists numerous variants without establishing priority; the present copy agrees generally with his 'B' variants. STC distinguishes the first and second editions by the corrected errata. Gibson 116b; STC 1160.
