Bagi was issued in a series produced by Steiff from 1908 to 1917. These bears, all dressed, were conceived for promotional postcards that Steiff printed around 1908.
These bears comprised of 'Babad', wearing knitted swimwear, 'Babo', a boy dressed in felt trousers and a jacket, 'Baho', a boy dressed in dungarees, 'Basi' and 'Basa', a boy and girl dressed in sailor's suits, 'Bastro', a boy dressed in knitted suit, 'Baru', girls dressed in traditional Russian costumes and last of all 'Bagi', dressed in felt skirt and jacket.
Only a few of these bears have ever been discovered so far, one Babo and one Bastro. It is believed that Bagi is the only known female example to be found.
Christie's would like to thank Margarete Steiff GmbH for allowing us to reproduce the original 1908 postcards, which are NOT included with the lot.
