Francis EDWARDS (bookseller). South Africa Exhibition of a Collection of 69 original oil paintings by Thomas Baines Artist and Trveller 1822-1875 The Kaffir Wars of 1848-1851. Livingstone's Zambesi Expedition and Chapman's Expedition from the South-west Coast to the Victoria Falls. London: 1912. Small 4° (250 x 180mm). Frontispiece, original price list bound in at rear. The two works bound in one volume. Contemporary green cloth, titled in gilt on spine, first work with original wrappers bound in.
VERY RARE: Miss White was apparently Baines' daughter. Lot 1380 in the auction of her estate was 'A unique series of oil paintings by Thomas Baines... 70 pictures in gilt frames'. This lot was evidently bought by Francis Edwards who offered 69 of the pictures for sale as a collection for £2000, or individually with prices ranging from £7 to £100.
