Original green cloth upper covers and spines blocked in gilt (slight discolouration of spines, small chips at head and foot). Provenance: The Lady Wharnecliffe (presentation inscription 'The Lady Wharnecliffe from Sam W Baker 25 May 1866'); Edward Montagu Stuart Granville, Earl of Wharncliffe (armorial bookplate); sold Sotheby's March 29 1988 lot 504.
PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, this an early issue with the incorrect plate list in vol.II calling for two maps at end of the vol. that are at the front of vol.I. Volume I includes an additional plate, not on the plate list (opposite p.351).
