Lot Essay

Barbara Rae is best known as a painter in oil and watercolour, however she is also an acclaimed printmaker and, from these prints, several carpets have been executed such as the present design, carried out by the Edinburgh Tapestry Company (Dovecot Studios). Her best known carpet commissions are for the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh (1994) and for the Royal Scottish Museum (1999). The present example is a one-off creation after a coloured etching executed in 1995. The view of Achiltibue is of special significance to the artist as it is an area that she visited often for many years and was a great inspiration to her.
