Baron Gustaaf Wappers was a student of G. Herreyns and M. Van Bree and a highly respected Belgian painter in the 19th century. He studied the works of Rembrandt in Holland. During a stay in Paris he came into contact with the Romantic and revolutionary movements in artistic and political society. When Wappers returned to his hometown of Antwerp, a group of young artists gathered around him. From 1839 until 1855 he was a senior director of the Academy in Antwerp. He is considered to be one of the founders of Romanticism in Belgium.
The oeuvre of Wappers consists mostly of historical pictures of Dutch history, genre pictures and portraits. His drawings and sketches, as seen in the present lots served as the first step towards his paintings.
