Riparato in Italia per sottrarsi alla giustizia olandese a seguito di un fatto d'armi che lo vide coinvolto, Bartholomeus Appelman è registrato a Roma negli elenchi dei Bentveughels, l'associazione dei pittori olandesi, con il soprannome 'Hector'.
Per le sue campagne romane in qualche occasione collaborò con pittori di figura, quali Johannes Lingelbach, Adriaen van de Velde e Philips Wouwerman. Si conoscono solo due altri dipinti firmati e datati, del 1671 e 1673 (a Vaduz, collezione Liechtenstein e a Magonza, Landesmuseum).
