Little is known about the painter. He was probably active in Bergen op Zoom, as he is recorded to have sold his house in Bergen op Zoom in 1647 before leaving to France (note of Dr. Bredius, kept in the RKD).
The attribution has been kindly suggested by Marijke de Kinkelder on the basis of comparison with the picture, signed and dated 1676, in a private collection, France (photograph in the RKD). Similar are the treatment of light and shadow cast on the columns and the naive perspective. Based on the picture in France, De Kinkelder tentatively compiled an oeuvre for the artist. So far the oeuvre consists of circa 10 paintings.
