The form of the current basin is based on Ming dynasty prototypes which were influenced by Middle Eastern glass and metalwares. For an example dating to the Yongle period, illustrated beside a Syrian glass basin, see Possessing the Past: Treasures from the National Palace Museum, Taipei, New York and Taipei, 1996, p. 437, pl. 231 & fig. 156. See also a Yongle example with similar decoration to the present lot which sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2006, lot 1510.
