The youngest son of John Frederick Herring, Sen., Benjamin chiefly painted racing and steeplechasing scenes. The present work probably relates to the series of pictures he executed of the Cambridgeshire and the Cesarewitch Stakes at Newmarket, the first two handicap steeplechases of national importance.
