2 works in one volume, 8o (175 x 106 mm). Contemporary German vellum, tooled in gilt with a central heart shaped design surrounded by a floral design painted in red, dark blue and yellow, gilt initials "JAZF" and dated "1815" on upper cover, spine in six compartments, gilt lettered in one, others with pained floral design, gilt and gauffered edges (light rubbing to edges). Provenance: Johann Andreas Zierfuss (presentation inscription dated 1815 on front free endpaper); purchased from Chiswick Book Shop, 5 November 1958.
An interesting example of a German painted vellum peasant, or "Bauern," binding, which bears a great resemblance to Pennsylvania Dutch examples.
