Two volumes, 4° (238 x 175mm, 240 x 185mm). Printed in Irish type, small woodcut initials, first work with first and final blank leaf, first blank to second work. (English and Irish prefaces to New Testament detached and inserted [?from another copy]; minor dampstaining in Old Testament, also a few minor marginal tears and holes.) Near-uniform contemporary calf and sheep, spines in compartments (splits in hinges, lower cover of Old Testament detached). Provenance: [Old Testament] John Maclaren M.D. (19th-century signature on title and armorial bookplate); [New Testament] signature and inscription 'Ex dono honoratissimi Rob. Boyle' on endpaper; Anth. Midensis, cost 9d (almost contemporary).
FIRST EDITION of the Old Testament in Irish translated by William Bedell, bishop of Kilmore. Second Irish edition of the New Testament of 1681, with an English preface by Andrew Sall. Both were printed in approximately 500 copies. This work was promoted by Robert Boyle (1627-1691) and printed mainly at his expense, with the Irish type cast in London by Moxon for the New Testament. A portion of the issue, perhaps 80 copies, were sent to Scotland for use by the Gaelic speaking Highlanders.
