Engraved title with portrait of Queen Elizabeth (laid down, remargined and with loss in lower portion supplied in facsimile), calendar partly printed in red, woodcut illustrations, maps, charts and initials, 2 engraved portraits, on second title and at beginning of Psalms, final blank leaf to second part, title to New Testament within woodcut border. (Without the possible blank at the end of the preliminaries, lacks final blank, some tears and margins repaired, a few small holes and repairs in text, margins trimmed very occasionally touching border to headline or marginal note, some leaves slightly soiled.) 19th-century green morocco over thick pasteboard, covers blocked in gilt and blind, spine gilt in compartments (scuffed), gilt inner dentelles, edges gilt. Provenance: Cardiff Castle bookplate; autograph note by Francis Fry, 1868, confirming the authenticity and completeness of this copy, tipped on endpaper.
First issue of the Bishops' Bible, revised from the Great Bible version by Matthew Parker and others. Herbert 125: 'in typography and illustration this is perhaps the most sumptuous in the long series of English folio bibles.' The price when published was 27s 8d. STC 2099.
