BLAGDON, Francis William (1778-1819). Authentic Memoirs of the Late George Morland... together with a facsimile of his writing, specimens of his hieroglyphic sketches, &c. London: Barnard & Sultzer for Edward Orme, 1806 [but watermarked 1824].
Large oblong 2° (440 x 580mm). Hand-coloured portrait frontispiece and 19 plates only (of 20, lacking An Ass Race), etched facsimile of Morland's writing printed as an illustration on p.12 of the text. (Occasional light marginal soiling and small tears to blank margins.) Contemporary marbled half sheep, gilt, morocco title label on upper cover, the flat spine in seven compartments, morocco lettering-piece in the second (slight scuffing).
'BLAGDON'S MEMOIRS OF GEORGE MORLAND IS AN EXTREMELY SCARCE BOOK' (Tooley). Many different engraving processes were used, aquatint, soft-ground etching, stipple and mezzotint. The mezzotints are colour-printed, the others coloured by hand. Cf. Abbey Life 208 (upright folio issue); Tooley 91.
