BRUCE, Charles, Viscount (1682-1747) -- A Catalogue of the Books of the Right Honourable Charles Viscount Bruce of Ampthill (Son and Heir Apparent of Thomas Earl of Ailesbury) and Baron Bruce of Whoreleton, in his Library at Totenham in the County of Wiltes. Oxford: Printed at the Theater [Oxford University Press], 1733.
Large 4o (291 x 228 mm). Contemporary English calf, spine gilt. Provenance: Littlecote (armorial bookplate).
The second-earliest English private library catalogue, preceded only by that of the Duke of Kingston's of 1726 (see previous lot). The extensive library which contained more that 8,500 titles was especially strong in the pamphlets and tracts of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It was sold at Sotheby's as the library of the Marquess of Ailesbury on March 3-5, 1919. Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 274-75; H. Carter, Oxford University Press I, 1975, p. 509.
