BUNYAN, John (1628-1688). The Pilgrim's Progress from this world to that which is to come . . . The ninth edition with additions. London: for Nathaniel Ponder, 1684.
12° (135 x 78mm). Collation: A6 B-K12. Advertisement, verso with engraved frontispiece of "sleeping Bunyan", 4pp. publisher's advertisements at end, woodcut illustrations on G1, H1 and K6. (Some signatures and catchwords shaved, side-notes on C2-3 and running heads on E4, E9 and K2 just trimmed, outer margins of first two leaves skilfully strengthened.) 19th-century blue morocco gilt, gilt edges, by W. Pratt. Provenance: Cardiff Castle bookplate.
Although this edition claims, on the title-page, to be the ninth, it is in fact the sixteenth, including unauthorised ones. The ninth authorised edition was actually published by Ponder in the previous year. According to Sharrock, "This edition, though called the ninth, is quite distinct from the ninth of 1683. It represents an entirely new setting up." The present copy differs from that described by Sharrock in that the portrait here does not bear the engraver's name ('W. Elder') and bears the advertisement for the copper plates on the recto, rather than being blank. The copy examined by Sharrock also apparently lacks the four pages of publisher's advertisements found in the present copy. Wing B-5570 (cites only six copies, including one imperfect); Harrison 23 (seven copies); Sharrock pp. lxvi-lxviii.
