FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY BURNETT TO LES BROWN on the front flyleaf: "Jan. 2nd, '52. for Les Brown, Sincerely, W.R. Burnett." The first volume of the author's City trilogy portrays the "corruption of a whole city in three stages: status quo, imbalance, and anarchy." It follows the effect of a jewel heist on a gang of criminals in an unnamed Midwestern city. It would be followed by Little Men, Big World (1951) and Vanity Row (1952). The film adaptation was directed by John Huston, and starred Sterling Hayden, Sam Jaffe, and Marilyn Monroe. It received four Academy Award nominations. BURNETT PRESENTATION COPIES ARE RARE.
