16°(120 x 89mm). Original red cloth over light boards, covers lettered and ruled in blind.

BURTON'S COPY WITH HIS NOTES, IN VERY FINE CONDITION. In 1875 Burton was still trying to sell his 'New System of Sword Exercise' to a London publisher and it is reasonable to assume that he marked this copy of the Horse Guard manual for revision and expansion in his own book finally published in 1876. His library at the R.A.I. contains eighty titles on the sword for his reference, but not this slight manual. He may have obtained it from Clowes, publisher of his 'Sword Exercises,' who were stockists of H.M.S.O. publications, see Kirkpatrick 1408-1488.
