BURTON, Richard Francis. Terminal Essay to "The Thousand and One Nights." London: For Private Circulation Only, 1890.

8° (193 x 130mm). Original purple wrappers, cover printed and ruled in black, in a purple cloth case, (a few slight chips to spine and wrapper edges).

UNPUBLISHED RARITY, NUMBER 30 OF 50 COPIES PRINTED, with manuscript corrections. Burton was prompted to reprint Section III D, Pederasty, from Vol. X of the Benares Edition by a 'luminous' essay of John Addington Symonds titled 'A Problem in Greek Ethics,' itself then lately reprinted. The corrections to text, spelling and punctuation go midway through the text and notes, and possibly were made for an intended subsequent printing. They were not incorporated into later editions of the 'Nights' as the entire section was, in fact, expurgated. Referred to briefly by Penzer but not recorded by him as having been seen. Penzer p. 195, 295.
