CALCULATIONS of the calendar, seasons and horoscopes. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER
[Probably Germany, c. 1679]
4o (200 x 155 mm). 49 + [1 blank] leaves. Dark brown ink. Ashkenazic semi-cursive script. Printed architectural title-page of unidentified Venetian origin. Numerous tables and diagrams, including three volvelles attached to fols. 19rv and 20rv to be used for various astronomical calculations, introduced with the words 'ke-she-tirtseh leda...' or likewise (fol. 20 with a tear from the margin toward the diagram), with later annotations, also in German, on the blank fols. 49v and rv. (First leaf badly frayed and rubbed, crudely encapsulated in modern paper, frayed edges, thumbed and soiled.) Modern blind and gold-tooled light brown morocco, two modern paper flyleaves at back and front.
The year 5439 (= 1679) is referred to several times in the examples, hence the suggested dating. On fols. 48v-49r there are additional notes concerning the fair in Frankfurt am Main and forecasting rain.
Gumpel ben Loeb Hamel and Menahem Levi, a teacher in Hamel (fol. 49r).
