Little is known about the artist, who was active in Amsterdam and studied under Pieter Pietersz. Barbiers I (1749-1842). One of his favourite subjects was interiors with doorkijkjes in the style of Pieter de Hooch. He is known to have worked together with Adriaen de Lelie (for whom see lot 205) (see E. van Eynden & A. van der Willigen, Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche schilderkunst, Haarlem, 1816-1841, III, pp. 112-3).
