Lot Essay

Flaminio Crivelli, of the Agliate (Carate Brianza) branch of the family, is recorded as having held a public post in the administration of Spanish Milan in 1657. It was probably he who commissioned Nuvolone's Coronation of the Virgin with Saints Peter, Paul, Ambrose and Charles Borromeo offered in these Rooms on 4 July, lot 94; first recorded in the collection of a Conte Vitaliano Crivelli in 1882, that altarpiece was probably painted for the church in the Crivelli domain at Agliate, of which Peter and Paul were the titular saints.

We are grateful to Dr. Filippo Maria Ferro for the above information and for confirming the attribution to Nuvolone of the present picture, which he dates c. 1640/50.
