First edition, privately published by the author. Chappe and his brothers invented a system of visual telegraphy, which eventually covered all of France and large stretches of many other countries, including the United States and Russia. Faraday's practical inventions in electricity changed telegraphy and telephony, so that by mid-century none of Chappe's telegraphic lines remained. The second volume of Chappe's book contains 34 detailed double-page engraved plates illustrating the structures and instruments necessary to make the system function. Fine set in contemporary red morocco gilt, the spines not quite uniformly tooled but by the same finisher.
