According to the present owner, her father was urged to purchase this picture by Sir Alfred Munnings at the Private View Day of the Royal Academy exhibition in 1946. Munnings had been elected President of the Royal Academy in 1944. The subject was an unusual one for Cundall who mainly painted interior scenes. It records the 'Dig for Victory' campaign, during which gardens and park land were given over to agricultural use during the second world war. Windsor led the way, with the great avenues being submitted to the plough. In Cundall's patriotic picture, the castle with flag aloft stands proud over the haymakers making stacks below. The picture was reproduced in the Britain in Pictures series English People by George Orwell.
