Lot Essay

Part of a series illustrating Don Quixote that Natoire made for Pierre Grimod Dufort (1692-1748). The final set, for which the present subject was not used, was of twelve compositions of which ten were woven by the Beauvais Factory between 1753 and 1744. The tapestries hung in Grimod's house, the Hôtel Chamillart. The present subject is placed between the seventh and eighth composition as finally designed by Natoire.
The subject of the drawing was also treated by Boucher in the set of designs he made for Don Quixote, published by Tanjè around 1746 (exhibited in Berlin, Charlottenburg, Don Quichotte und Ragotin, 2004, no. N.25, p. 222).
