Saint Hyacinth (circa 1185-1257) was a patron saint of Poland and a missionary among the pagans of Northern Europe. He received the habit from Saint Dominic himself and carried his message to Germany, Denmark, Scandinavia and Russia, establishing a monastery at Kiev. A short while later the city was besieged by a Mongol raiding party, but the Saint and his followers were able to walk to safety across the river carrying the treasures of the foundation. It was said that his footprints could be seen on the water for many years.
