THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN
The following lots comprise paintings originally from a set of 120, which were commissioned by the Director of the Swedish East India Company in circa 1783. In 1784, the set was brought to Stockholm by the Swedish ship The Gustavus III together with original documentation in Swedish giving the name of each boat, its place of origin and function (with a later translation in English). Twelve of the original 120 paintings were displayed at an ethnographical exhibition in the Hereditary Prince's Palace in circa 1878, during which time four are believed to have been lost. Six paintings from the set were sold in these Rooms, 12 November 2002, lot 88.
