CHINESE WATERCOLOURS. - A collection of five albums containing original watercolour drawings on pith paper, [?Canton: circa 1840]. 5 volumes, 2° or oblong 2° (375 x 275mm). 111 mounted drawings (345 x 225mm. and smaller). (Some slight damage and loss.) Uniform limp red cloth, all within a single red morocco slip-case modelled as a book, decorated in gilt, titled on spine 'A Collection of Chinese Drawings'.
A fine selection of chinese drawings probably sold in Canton in the mid-19th century, and mounted and bound in Europe. The drawings include the courtly scenes, flower paintings, and trades, all popular export images. The album comprises:
Album 1: 12 scenes from the life of a high-born chinese man, brocade borders (210 x 335mm. approx.).
11 drawings of silk production (265 x 175mm. approx.)
5 drawings of ladies of the ?court (255 x 180mm. approx.)
Album 2: 10 drawings of Tea production, brocade borders (230 x 340mm. approx.)
Album 3: 12 drawings of figures in a procession, blue silk borders (220 x 345mm. approx.)
Album 4: 12 decorative flower drawings, each incorporating a butterfly, blue silk borders (225 x 315mm. approx.)
25 small costume studies, glazed paper borders (125 x 100mm. approx.), mounted 2 or 3 to a page on 9 leaves.
12 larger costume studies (6 pairs), blue silk borders (250 x 160mm. approx.), mounted 2 to a page on 6 leaves.
Album 5: 12 portraits of courtly personages, each accompanied by a servant or subordinate, and with elaborately decorated foregrounds, brocade borders (345 x 225mm. approx.). (5)
