The discovery of the date 1640 on the present picture, makes it contemporary with the other rendering of the subject by the artist, which is in the Musees Royaux des Beaux Arts, Brussels (Maier-Preusker, op.cit., cat.no.A4, fig.34).
In the composition of the present picture, van Couwenbergh concentrates on the female nude and places the infant Moses in the centre, while in the Brussels rendering, the emphasis is more on the rich costumes of the female figures. Thus the present picture shows the artist in a Caravaggist vein, following his fellow townsmen Honthorst, van Baburen and Terbrugghen.
The subject is taken from Exodus, II:5-6.
