Westminster Bridge was officially opened in November 1750. Construction had lasted for nine years and cost £393,189. Built to facilitate the growth of Westminster, the bridge was designed by the Swiss engineer Charles Labelye, and is considered one of Londons first feats of modern engineering. The bridge spanned 1,200 feet of the river Thames, and survived until 1854 when it was replaced with the present cast-iron structure.
