Lot Essay

The officer is wearing the uniform of the Bengal Native Infantry, and the Gwalior Star; this was issued for the battles of Mahavajpoor and Punniar, both fought on 12 December 1843. Three Foot Regiments fought at Mahavajpoor - 39th, 40th, 50th - and 2nd, 31st, 62nd and 70th of Bengal Native Infantry, to one of which the sitter must have belonged.
