This view in the Lake District shows the Coniston and Weatherlam fells on the western side of Coniston Water. The mansion in the distance is Coniston Hall, a medieval house rebuilt in the 16th Century. The oldest building in Coniston, it is noteable for its substantial round chimneys typical of Lakeland style.
Coniston was a popular retreat for artists in the 18th and 19th Centuries, including J.M.W. Turner. They were attracted by the dramatic landscape and painterly quality of the light, accentuated by reflections on the water and shadows from the fells.
