    Lot Essay

This painting could be a version of the tête d'ange produced for Antoine Blanchard in order for him to create a plate for a series of engravings. The tête d'Ange was in reality a portrait of Delaroche's new wife Madame Vernet and was painted in Florence in a manner inspired by florentine artists such as Fra Angelico.
we are grateful to Professor Stephen Bann for his help in cataloging this lot and for his comments during examination of the work.
