Circle of William Hoare of Bath, R.A. (1706-1799) Portrait of Mrs Hanway Ballack, half-length, wearing a pale pink dress trimmed with lace, with a sprig of flowers in her bodice with inscription 'From the Collection of Mr Burney/Tasburgh hall/Norwich' and further inscribed 'Extract from the Connoisseur SEP. 1912. A characteristic Pastel of Mrs. Ballack./by Daniel Gardner - This Lady's husband Mr. Hanway Ballack was a nephew of Joseph Hanway the well know philanthropist who established the Foundling Hospital and first introduced the umbrella to England - Mr Ballack on the death of his Uncle assumed the name of Hanway.-' (on the label on the reverse of the frame) pastel 22½ x 17 3/8 in. (57.2 x 44.2 cm.) in the original 18th Century Kentian frame

Mrs Hanway Ballack's husband was the nephew of Joseph Hanway the philanthropist and co-founder of the foundling hospital. The Hanways were friends and neighbours of the Burneys and in Dr. Johnson's circle.
