8o. Original red cloth; dust jacket; elaborate red, maroon and black morocco folding case with the spine made to resemble a submarine. Provenance: Don Swaim, radio personality (presentation inscription).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Clancy on the half-title: "To Don Swaim Best Regards Tom Clancy 12/14/84." Rumor has it that a woman in Washington D.C. read The Hunt For Red October when it was first published and loved it so much that she gave a copy to all her friends, one of whom was President Reagan. He once stepped off Marine One with the book under his arm. When a reporter saw the book and asked Reagan what he was reading, he held up the book so the cover was visible and replied, "It's a really a good yarn." After Reagan's compliment, Clancy's novel became a best seller. A film version was released in 1990 starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan. Also included in this copy is a news release about the book.
