Lot Essay

A similar sheet, of the Waterfalls at Schaffhausen, was sold at Christie's Monaco, 20 June 1994, lot 107. These drawings may be projects for prints after designs by Chatelet for the book Tableaux de la Suisse published by Laborde & Zurlauben in 1781-6.
The waterfall at Reinbach was the site of Sherlock Holmes' final struggle with Professor Moriarty in which the eminent detective mysteriously disappeared.
